picture of Emily Giffin's book, "Meant to Be"

In “Meant to Be” by Emily Griffin, Giffin follows Joseph S. Kingsley III and Cate, who come from vastly different backgrounds but find themselves thrust into the spotlight of American society.

The Kingsley family is as close to American royalty as families can get. Joseph S. Kingsley III is expected to continue the family legacy after his father's untimely death. However, he is a bit reckless and has trouble living up to the expectations of his family and the country. Cate, on the other hand, grows up in a single-parent household and becomes a model as a teenager in order to escape her difficult circumstances. When Cate and Joe meet, they have an instant connection, but it is unclear whether their relationship will survive the pressure of being in the public eye. As they reach a make-or-break point in their relationship, they must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome their circumstances.

I really enjoyed this book and knowing that it was loosely based off JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's relationship helped me visualize (and honestly enjoy) the book more than I think I would have otherwise. Both Joe and Cate are such dynamic protagonists and Giffin did a great job developing supporting characters as well. I loved Giffin's writing style and found it very easy to "see" the book as I was reading. This book reminded me a lot of Taylor Jenkins Reid, and I will definitely read other Giffin books in the future.
