“Pineapple Street” by Jenny Jackson is a family drama that follows the Stockton family—a New York family of one-percenters.
Darley, the eldest daughter, makes a questionable choice when she chooses to forgo her inheritance and prioritize her love for her husband, Malcom. She leaves her job at Goldman Sachs to raise her two children and relies solely on Malcom’s income. However, when Malcolm loses his job, their lifestyle undergoes a transformation, leading to new challenges.
Sasha, originally from a middle-class background, experiences a cultural shock when she marries Cord, a key figure in the Stockton family's real estate investment firm. She struggles to assimilate into the family's rules, culture, and rituals, feeling like an outsider.
Georgina, the youngest of the family, falls in love with somebody she shouldn’t and has to face the consequences.
The story unfolds through the Darley, Sasha, and Georgina’s perspectives, changing perspectives every chapter. “Pineapple Street” explores the complexities of wealth, change, self-reflection, and the choices we make. The reader enters the world of family relationships, love, privilege and the challenges faced by the rich.
I found the book to be an engaging and easy read. I am not typically drawn to character driven family dramas like this, but I really enjoyed it and would happily recommend it to others.
