“Something In the Water” by Catherine Steadman gets an “oof” from me.
While scuba diving during their honeymoon, Erin and her husband find a locked black bag in the water floating in sea. After looking into its contents and debating the morals of keeping the bag, they decide to bring the bag back to London with them and make a plan on how to reap the rewards of their find.
This was a really weird book, and I'm baffled how people can give it five stars.
First of all, Erin, as narrator of the book, seems to be suffering from delusions and paranoia. Which, yes, to a certain extent is to be expected given the "black bag," but I felt like I was reading the fragmented and choppy thoughts of somebody in a mental hospital.
Second, Erin can't seem to accept what's really going on. She justifies *everything* in her head and even when ALL signs point the other way, her justifications become even more far fetched. I wanted to throw the book across the room and slap her.
Lastly, the book ended with no closure or conclusion for the reader (and so many unanswered questions). So, it basically built up to... nothing...
