In Lucy Foley’s latest book, “The Paris Apartment,” Foley follows Jess, who is in desperate need of a new beginning after finding herself broke and unemployed. She seeks refuge in Paris with her half-brother, Ben, who does not seem so pleased to have her.

Soon after arriving in Paris, Ben is nowhere to be found. Jess becomes nervous and begins to ask questions. Ben’s neighbors are an electric bunch and all become potential suspects in his mysterious disappearance.

The last two books by Lucy Foley that I read, “The Hunting Party” and “The Guest List” had my jaw on the floor with their unexpected twists. However, in this particular book, I found myself picking up on the subtle hints she dropped throughout the narrative, which made the eventual twist less shocking. And because of this, the book did not have the same impact on me as her previous books did nor live up to my high expectations of her as an author.

Despite this underwhelming twist, I still enjoyed the book. I love her unique way of unfolding the mystery—using short chapters and alternating viewpoints of the characters. I’ve been a fan of Foley’s writing since reading her first book and will continue to read any more she releases in hopes they will once again give me the same feelings I had during her other books.
